Popocatépetl Volcano (El Popo), Mexico, Oli on canvas 40"x 30”
Popocatépetl is 43 miles southeast of Mexico City, from where it can be seen regularly, depending on atmospheric conditions. At 17,802 feet it is the second highest peak in Mexico, after Citlaltépetl (Pico de Orizaba) at 18,491 feet. Until recently, the volcano was one of three tall peaks in Mexico to contain glaciers. The volcano is also referred to “El Popo”. The painting depicts an early stage of a major eruption in April 2019 in which the plume rose to 26,000 feet raining ash for miles around the area. El Popo is seen here from the slopes of neighboring Iztaccihuatl, which my daughter climbed since El Popo was closed because of the eminent danger of an eruption.
